VÍ DỤ VUI • ĐÚNG NGHĨA
The robot was repaired by Linh, who had first been assigned to decorate its box.

GRAM • MEANING → FORM → USE

  • present passive: am/is/are + past participle
  • past passive: was/were + past participle
  • by + agent when relevant
  • active question: Who made the decision?

Câu dùng thật

Preferences are collected before roles are assigned.

The first list was changed after feedback.

The robot was repaired by Linh.

Who selected the original team?

Bẫy cần gỡ

Không coi passive là luôn khách quan. ‘Mistakes were made’ có thể giấu người chịu trách nhiệm. Không dùng giới tính làm bằng chứng về sở thích, năng lực hay vai trò.

A fictional school is reviewing how roles were assigned for a technology exhibition. On the first list, most technical tasks were given to boys, while most design and welcome tasks were given to girls. The list did not record any student's preference or previous practice. During a class meeting, Linh said that she wanted to repair the model, and Minh said that he wanted to design the visitor guide. Their requests showed that the original pattern was not a reliable measure of interest. The teacher did not simply reverse every role. Instead, preferences were collected from all students, the task requirements were explained, and short practice sessions were offered. The second list was prepared by the student committee using two published criteria: stated interest and completed practice. Linh was assigned to the repair team, and Minh was assigned to design. The school reports the process, not a claim that every gender now has identical interests. It will review participation after the exhibition and ask whether any student lacked information, time or access to practice. An anonymous form will let students suggest one improvement after the event.

Fair opportunity is a process we can inspect

Tìm ACCESS–INFORMATION–CHOICE–CRITERION–DECISION–REVIEW. Không suy sở thích từ giới tính.

Equal opportunity cannot be checked by looking only at the final group photo. A team may appear mixed while some students were never told about a role, invited to practise or asked what they wanted to learn. A fairer process makes several stages visible. Information about every role should be shared in language that students can understand. Preferences should be collected without assuming that gender predicts interest or ability. If a task requires prior practice, access to that practice should be offered before selection. Criteria should then be published and applied consistently. Passive voice is useful for describing these stages: preferences are collected; practice is offered; roles are assigned. However, a passive sentence should not hide a decision maker when accountability matters. Readers may need to ask who designed the criteria, who applied them and how a decision can be reviewed. Fairness also does not require forcing every group to contain identical numbers regardless of choice. It requires removing irrelevant barriers and examining whether people received information, a genuine opportunity and a transparent decision. The review should use more than one observation. A single event cannot prove that every barrier has disappeared. It can show whether the stated process was followed and where the next correction may be needed. A published review date gives students a real route to question the process.

For our fictional technology exhibition, every role will be explained before students choose. A short description of the repair, design, speaking and organisation tasks will be shared with the whole class. Preferences will be collected without assuming that gender predicts interest or ability. If practice is required, the same introductory session will be offered to all interested students. The final roles will be assigned by the student committee using two published criteria: stated interest and completed practice. The committee will record its decisions, so students can ask how a criterion was applied. After the exhibition, participation will be reviewed and students will be asked whether they received enough information, time and access. This process cannot prove that every barrier has disappeared, but it makes one decision transparent and correctable.
