Useful under conditions

Hữu ích khi có điều kiện

Ứng dụng hứa ‘tập trung tuyệt đối’. Điện thoại nghe xong liền gửi ba thông báo để kiểm tra lời hứa.

NỀN ĐƯỢC PHÉP DÙNG

Bài 6–7; first conditional, past forms, claim–evidence–limit.

If my phone were my study partner, I would ask it to stop inviting three hundred notifications.

/meɪk ə kənˈdɪʃənl ˌrekəmenˈdeɪʃn/đưa khuyến nghị có điều kiện

Make a conditional recommendation, not a universal one.

GRAM • MEANING → FORM → USE

First conditional nói khả năng thực tế hơn.

  • If + past simple, would + base verb
  • If I/he/she/it were…, I/he/she/it would…
  • real possibility: If + present, will/can…
  • hypothetical: If + past, would…

Câu dùng thật

If the app were a person, I would ask how it used my data.

If I had fewer notifications, I would focus more easily.

If the trial works tomorrow, we will repeat it.

If we tested an imaginary perfect app, the result would tell us little.

I'd /aɪd/, you'd /juːd/, we'd /wiːd/. Nhấn phần thay đổi tưởng tượng: FEWER notifications → FOCUS more. Giữ /d/ cuối để không nhầm I'd với I.

MINIMAL PAIRS / MẪU ÂM
  • I would /aɪ wʊd/ — I'd /aɪd/
  • we would /wiː wʊd/ — we'd /wiːd/
  • FEWER alerts — FOCUS MORE

A fictional class is comparing a focus timer in two study situations. In the first trial, students read a short passage with notifications turned off. The timer divided the task into ten-minute rounds and displayed a quiet break signal. Several students completed the planned rounds, but the class did not measure long-term learning. In the second situation, notifications remained on and the device vibrated often. Students reported more interruptions, although the timer itself had not changed. The class concluded that the tool worked differently under different conditions. It did not call the timer good or bad for everyone. The teacher then asked a hypothetical question: if the timer were a person, what information would it need before giving advice? Students answered that it would need the task, available time, notification setting and user's preference. A real next step was also agreed: if the privacy information is clear and the school approves the settings, the class will run one more fictional trial. No personal accounts or private messages will be collected for the exercise. The students will record only task times, interruption counts and voluntary comments about the setup.

Technology is not a result without a condition

Gắn mọi claim với USER–TASK–SETTING–TIME–MEASURE–LIMIT. Phân biệt real next step với thought experiment.

Statements such as ‘technology improves learning’ are too broad to guide a decision. A tool is used by a particular person, for a task, under settings and limits. Change one condition and the result may change. A focus timer may support short work rounds when notifications are off, yet add little when messages continue to interrupt the user. This does not prove that the timer caused every difference, especially in a small classroom trial. It shows why conditions must be recorded. Benefits should be compared with costs. A tool may save time but require data, attention, money or maintenance. Privacy information and permission also matter; students should not enter personal information merely to complete a language activity. Conditional language helps separate two kinds of reasoning. First conditional can describe a real next test: if the school approves the settings, the class will repeat the trial. Second conditional creates a hypothetical case: if the app were a person, what would it need to know before advising a user? The imagined question can reveal missing conditions, but it is not a prediction. A responsible recommendation therefore names the task and evidence, states a cost or limit and offers an if-clause. It does not call a tool essential, harmful or effective for everyone when the evidence only covers one short, fictional scenario. Another user, task or setting could reasonably lead to a different recommendation.

1Why record conditions?

2What does a second-conditional question do here?

I would recommend testing the fictional focus timer only for a clear task and under recorded settings. In our short scenario, several students completed planned reading rounds when notifications were turned off. When alerts remained on, they reported more interruptions. This comparison does not prove long-term learning or show that the timer suits everyone. The tool may organise time, but it also requires attention to settings and privacy information. If the school approves the settings and the information is clear, the class will run one more trial without collecting personal accounts. If the timer were a study partner, it would need to ask about the task, available time and user's preferences before giving advice. My recommendation is therefore conditional: test one purpose, protect personal information and review both benefit and cost.
