Focus the decision

It-cleft có mẫu It is/was + thành phần được nhấn + that/who + clause. Cấu trúc làm nổi người, vật, thời gian hoặc lý do đã có trong mệnh đề gốc; nó không thay đổi giá trị chứng cứ.

Khung câu

  • It is/was + focus + that + clause
  • who may follow a focused person
  • tense in be reflects time of focus
  • compare with the neutral base clause

Câu dùng thật

The shared measure changed the decision.

It was the shared measure that changed the decision.

It is Team C who will verify the entries.

It was after the correction that the smaller difference appeared.

Bẫy cần gỡ

Không lặp focus trong clause: It was the measure that it changed.... Không dùng cleft để phóng đại certainty. Nếu focus là reason, cần reason thực sự có trong hồ sơ.

A fictional ecology club is finalising a recommendation after two courtyard simulations. At first, several students prefer Option A because its name sounds more natural. The chair returns to the agreed table. It was the water-retention measure, not the option name, that supported Option A in the first simulation. However, maintenance time also matters, and Option A required more fictional staff minutes. After the second simulation, the water result changed slightly while the maintenance difference remained. It was after the unit labels were checked that the team accepted the revised table. The cleft sentences help listeners hear which detail changed the discussion, but they do not create new evidence. The group makes a limited recommendation: test Option A once more under a second rainfall pattern before selecting a courtyard method. It is Team C who will verify the entries, while Team B will record maintenance time. The members state what remains uncertain: the simulations cannot predict biodiversity, long-term cost or real-world performance. One student proposes removing that sentence to make the presentation sound confident. The chair refuses. It is the explicit limitation that keeps the recommendation honest. The final slide contains one priority, two supporting measures, one trade-off, three uncertainties and a verification step scheduled before any decision.

Focus helps a decision; evidence carries it

Viết base sentence cho mỗi cleft. Sau đó gạch EVIDENCE–TRADE-OFF–UNCERTAINTY–VERIFY; nếu thiếu, cleft chỉ là sân khấu.

A recommendation often contains more information than a listener can hold at once. An it-cleft helps direct attention to one constituent: ‘It was the shared measure that changed the decision.’ The neutral sentence is ‘The shared measure changed the decision.’ Both contain the same basic claim; the cleft marks the measure as the contrastive focus. A person can also be focused: ‘It is Team C who will verify the entries.’ Time can be highlighted: ‘It was after the correction that the smaller difference appeared.’ Pronunciation completes the structure by placing the main stress on the focused words. Focus is not proof. A dramatic cleft can emphasise a weak reason just as easily as a strong one. The writer must still show the record, common measure, trade-off and source boundary. Environmental recommendations also need uncertainty. A short simulation may compare water retention and maintenance time, but it cannot establish biodiversity effects or long-term cost. The final decision should therefore match its criterion. If the current priority is to improve the comparison method, the recommendation may be another controlled trial, not immediate real-world implementation. A verification step names who will check which record and when. Cleft sentences are useful in the presentation because they answer the listener’s question ‘what mattered here?’ The evidence section answers a different question: ‘why should I accept that focus?’ Keeping those questions separate prevents style from impersonating certainty. It was the explicit link between measure and limited action—not the complexity of the sentence—that made the recommendation defensible.

1What remains the same between a neutral sentence and its cleft?

2What question does the evidence section answer?

Model • 166 words

Our fictional ecology club compared two courtyard options in two short simulations. The neutral finding is that the shared water measure changed the discussion. It was that measure, not the natural-sounding option name, that supported Option A in the first record. However, Option A also required more fictional maintenance time. After the unit labels were checked, the revised table showed a smaller water difference. It was the explicit method limit that prevented the group from claiming a final winner. The simulations cannot predict biodiversity, long-term cost or performance in a real ecosystem. We therefore recommend one more controlled simulation rather than immediate implementation. It is Team C who will verify every entry, while Team B will record maintenance time under a second rainfall pattern. The next decision will use the same two measures and will state any remaining uncertainty. This recommendation improves a fictional comparison method only. The cleft sentences highlight the decisive criterion; they do not add evidence or increase the certainty of the result.
