“The photo said nothing. The caption did all the talking, so it had to tell the truth.”Bức ảnh không tự nói gì. Chú thích nói thay tất cả nên phải trung thực.

Reported statements and questions
Dùng said (that) để thuật lại câu kể.
- Speaker said (that) + clause.
- Speaker asked if + subject + verb.
- Speaker asked + wh-word + subject + verb.
- No question word order after asked.
Câu dùng thật
The guide said that the photo showed a school event.
Lan asked if the date was correct.
Minh asked where the image came from.
Bẫy cần gỡ
Sau asked if/where dùng trật tự câu kể: where the image came from, không phải where did the image come from.
Câu Yes/No trực tiếp thường lên giọng; câu hỏi Wh- thường xuống.

A student team found an old photograph in the school's digital archive. The file name included a year but no description. One student guessed that it showed a festival of a particular ethnic group. The team did not publish that guess. They asked the school librarian where the image came from. She said that a former teacher had donated it, but she was not certain about the event. Next, they contacted the archive coordinator. He checked a paper record and said that the photograph showed students at a provincial school exhibition in 2008. It included clothing displays from several communities, but the record did not identify every person or item. The team wrote a limited caption with the confirmed event, place and year. They also stated what the record did not confirm. Their careful note was more useful than the exciting first guess.
- 1Why did the team not publish its first guess?
- 2What did the paper record confirm?
Hội thoại có mục đích
Mục tiêu: Hỏi nguồn và tường thuật đúng câu trả lời.
Vai: A: biên tập viên • B: người kiểm nguồn
AWhere did the image come from?
BThe coordinator said that it came from a school archive.
ADid he identify every person?
BNo. He said that the record did not include every name.
AWhat should the caption state?
BIt should state the confirmed event and the missing information.
What a caption can honestly claim
A responsible caption helps a viewer understand both the image and its limits. Begin with information that a reliable record confirms: date, place, event and creator when available. If a person provides context, identify the account as a report rather than turning it into an unquestioned fact. For example, write ‘Mr An recalled that the picture was taken after a performance,’ not ‘The picture was definitely taken after a performance,’ unless another record confirms it. Do not identify a person's ethnicity, beliefs or relationship from clothing or appearance alone. An image may show objects or actions, but it cannot automatically explain their meaning. If names are unknown, say so. If permission for public use is unclear, stop and ask the responsible archive owner. A short honest caption with an acknowledged gap is stronger than a detailed story built from assumptions. Responsible editors prefer a visible gap to an invented certainty.
1How should a memory be presented without another record?
2What should happen if public-use permission is unclear?
Plan
- Điều nguồn xác nhận
- Điều người nói tường thuật
- Điều chưa biết
- Giới hạn nhận diện

This fictional archive photograph shows a school exhibition in 2008. The paper record confirms the year, place and event, but it does not identify every student or display. The archive coordinator said that a former teacher had donated the image. He also said that several communities contributed clothing displays; however, the record did not match each item to a contributor. We do not infer anyone's ethnicity from appearance or clothing. Public use would require permission from the responsible archive owner. The caption therefore states the confirmed context and leaves unverified details open.
