Compare like with like

So sánh trên cùng một thước đo

Ba nhóm đều tuyên bố phương án của mình ‘xanh nhất’. Một nhóm đo rác, một nhóm đo thời gian, nhóm còn lại đo… độ đẹp của áp phích. So sánh cần chung tiêu chí.

NỀN ĐƯỢC PHÉP DÙNG

Bài 10–11 đã xác định đúng đối tượng và kiểm claim; comparative/superlative cơ bản đã học ở THCS.

VÍ DỤ VUI • ĐÚNG NGHĨA
Our poster is greener than yours because we used a greener marker — said no useful audit ever.

Áp phích của nhóm tớ xanh hơn vì dùng bút xanh hơn — chưa cuộc kiểm định hữu ích nào nói thế.

Comparative cần hai đối tượng trên cùng measure; superlative cần một nhóm so sánh xác định.

Comparatives and superlatives: cùng tiêu chí, đúng nhóm

Route B is shorter than Route A.

Plan C is more practical than Plan A for this timetable.

Route B has the fewest single-use items in the table.

Plan A is as clear as Plan C.

Bẫy cần gỡ

Không dùng more shorter hoặc the most easiest. Không gọi ‘best’ nếu chưa nêu nhóm và tiêu chí. Dữ liệu hư cấu chỉ hỗ trợ tình huống học, không là lời khuyên du lịch thật.

A fictional class is comparing three plans for a one-day learning visit. The table uses two separate measures. For round-trip distance, Route A is forty kilometres, Route B is thirty kilometres and Route C is fifty kilometres. Route B is therefore the shortest of the three by the stated estimate. For single-use items supplied to twenty students, Plan A lists forty bottles, Plan B lists twenty bottles and Plan C lists none because students refill their own containers in the scenario. Plan C has the fewest listed single-use items. It is not automatically the best plan, however. Its refill point has not been confirmed, and the distance table shows that Route C is the longest. The teacher asks students to rank one criterion at a time. For the present timetable, Route B is shorter than A and C, while Plan C lists fewer single-use items than A and B. A combined decision needs priorities and verified details. The class records one uncertainty beside every estimate and refuses to compare the colour of the posters. Their recommendation names the measure, the group of options and the missing information.

A fair comparison holds the ruler still

Tìm group, criterion, unit, value và uncertainty. Mỗi than/of phải trả lời được ‘so với ai’ và ‘theo tiêu chí nào’.

A comparison is useful only when its ruler stays still. Imagine that one travel plan is described as shorter, another as cheaper and a third as more attractive. Those statements may all be true, yet they do not produce one ranking because they use different criteria. First, define the group of options. A superlative such as ‘the shortest’ needs a clear group: the shortest of which routes? Next, choose one measure and one unit. If distance is estimated in kilometres, every route should be treated in the same way, including the return journey. If waste is counted by single-use items, the counting rule must remain the same for each plan. Then record uncertainty. An estimate may depend on a route that changes, and a refill plan may depend on a point that has not been confirmed. Comparative grammar makes relationships concise: Route B is shorter than Route A; Plan C is more practical for one timetable. Superlative grammar identifies an extreme within a group: Route B is the shortest of three by the stated distance. Neither form proves an overall winner. A responsible recommendation combines language with judgement. It names the criterion, states the result and keeps an important trade-off visible. ‘Route B is the shortest, but Plan C lists the fewest single-use items’ is more informative than ‘B is best.’ If the decision requires several criteria, the group must explain their priority instead of quietly switching rulers. The final sentence should also state what must be verified before action.

1Why do shorter, cheaper and more attractive not create one ranking?

2What should a responsible recommendation include?

The fictional table compares three plans for the same class visit. By the stated round-trip distance, Route B is shorter than Routes A and C, and it is the shortest of the three. By the number of listed single-use items, Plan C performs differently: it has the fewest items because students refill their own containers. However, Plan C is not automatically the best overall choice. Route C is the longest, and its refill point has not been confirmed. For our present timetable, I recommend checking whether Route B can also use a verified refill point. That combined option may be more practical than choosing by only one measure. The figures are classroom estimates, not current travel advice. Before making a real plan, the school should confirm the route, transport details and site rules with the relevant provider.
