Read the green small print

The tour, which is greener than my green socks, still needs evidence.

01

read the small print

/riːd ðə smɔːl prɪnt/đọc phần thông tin chi tiết

Read the small print below the headline.

02

support a local guide

/səˈpɔːt ə ˈləʊkl ɡaɪd/ủng hộ hướng dẫn viên địa phương

The fictional tour pays and supports a local guide.

03

Respect a visitor limit when one is stated.

04

The audit asks whether an encounter is staged.

05

Separate a promise from evidence in the advert.

06

ask for a source

/ɑːsk fər ə sɔːs/yêu cầu nguồn thông tin

Ask for a source when a number appears.

GRAM • MEANING → FORM → USE

  • named person, who + verb…, main clause
  • named thing, which + verb…, main clause
  • place/name, where + subject + verb…, main clause
  • Không bỏ relative pronoun; không dùng that

Câu dùng thật

Ms Lan, who leads the fictional audit, checks the advert.

Green Path, which is a made-up tour, lists three actions.

Willow Bay, where the scenario occurs, has a visitor limit.

The headline, which sounds impressive, provides no number.

SOUND • CLEAR ENGLISH

A fictional class is auditing an advert for Green Path, which is a made-up weekend tour. The headline calls it ‘the completely green escape’. Below the headline, the small print lists three actions. The operator uses one shared bus, pays a local guide and limits each group to twelve visitors in the scenario. The advert also says that every meal creates zero waste, but it gives no method, time period or source for that claim. Ms Lan, who leads the classroom audit, marks the transport and group limit as checkable details. She marks the zero-waste sentence as an unsupported promise. A photograph shows visitors beside an animal, but the caption does not explain whether the encounter was distant, natural or staged. The class therefore asks for more information instead of accusing anyone. Their verdict is limited: the advert contains some specific actions, yet the available text does not support the word ‘completely’. Green Path is fictional, so students do not book, contact or review a real company. They rewrite the headline as ‘A small-group tour with three stated measures’ and keep two questions for the imaginary operator.

TALK • ROLE + GOAL + REPAIR

Vai: A: người kiểm quảng cáo • B: đại diện tour hư cấu

AYour advert, which promises zero waste, gives no method. Could you explain it?

BThe claim refers to one meal in our fictional plan.

AWhat evidence would be recorded?

BWe would record the items left after that meal.

AThen may we replace ‘completely green’ with a narrower claim?

BYes. The new wording should name the action and limit.

Eco-tourism language needs a visible audit trail

An eco-tourism advert has two jobs: it must attract attention and give readers enough information to judge a choice. Trouble begins when the first job hides the second. Words such as ‘green’, ‘natural’ or ‘responsible’ may express a goal, but they do not identify an action, measure or source. A careful reader asks what the operator actually does. Does the plan state a group limit? Does it explain transport, waste handling or contact with wildlife? If a number appears, who recorded it and over what period? Non-defining relative clauses can make an audit clearer. ‘The tour, which uses one shared bus, reports its transport plan’ adds information about an already named tour. ‘Ms Hoa, who coordinates the visit, records the group size’ adds information about a named person. The commas signal that the identity is already clear. Grammar, however, cannot turn an unsupported claim into evidence. A beautiful sentence may still omit the method. Photographs also need context; an image cannot by itself show whether an encounter was natural, distant or staged. A fair audit avoids two extremes. It does not accept every green word, and it does not accuse an operator without evidence. It labels what the advert states, what can be checked and what remains unknown. The final judgement should match the available text: ‘three measures are described, but the overall environmental effect is not established.’ Such wording is less dramatic than ‘perfectly green’, yet it is more useful to a traveller who wants a responsible decision.

2What does a fair audit do?

Plan

  1. Named fictional advert
  2. Two stated actions
  3. Added details
  4. Unsupported claim
  5. Neutral question
  6. Narrow verdict

Model • 140 words

Green Path, which is a fictional weekend tour, describes three environmental measures. It uses one shared bus, pays a local guide and limits each group to twelve visitors. Ms Lan, who leads our classroom audit, marks these as specific statements that an operator could document. However, the advert also promises that every meal creates zero waste. That claim gives no method, time period or source. The photograph, which shows visitors beside an animal, also lacks enough context to show whether the encounter was natural or staged. We would ask the imaginary operator how waste is counted and how wildlife distance is managed. Our verdict is therefore narrow: the advert states several useful actions, but the available text does not prove that the whole tour is ‘completely green’. A clearer headline would name the actions instead of making an absolute promise.
