Report, confirm, cooperate

They said ‘five ideas’; Nam reported ‘fifty goats’. Please confirm before ordering grass.

Họ nói ‘năm ý tưởng’; Nam tường thuật thành ‘năm mươi con dê’. Hãy xác nhận trước khi đặt mua cỏ.

Reported speech giữ nghĩa, không giữ nguyên trật tự câu hỏi. Ghi keyword và xác nhận số/tên/thời điểm trước khi hành động.

GRAM • MEANING → FORM → USE

Reported statements and questions: giữ nghĩa, đổi điểm nhìn

Khi tường thuật một cuộc trao đổi đã kết thúc, said/told đưa câu kể về lời người khác; asked if/whether dùng cho yes/no question; asked + wh-word dùng cho câu hỏi có từ hỏi. Câu hỏi tường thuật dùng trật tự câu kể.

Khung câu

  • said (that) + clause; told + person + (that) + clause
  • asked if/whether + subject + verb…
  • asked + wh-word + subject + verb…
  • past reporting: am/is→was; are→were; will→would; have/has→had; đổi pronoun/time word khi ngữ cảnh yêu cầu

Câu dùng thật

Linh said that her group was ready.

She told us that they would send five ideas the next day.

They asked whether we had checked the title.

They asked when our group could reply.

Khi xác nhận số/tên, nhấn từ cần kiểm: Did you say FIVE ideas? Không dạy dạng mạnh–yếu hay nối âm chuyên biệt của lớp 11.

MINIMAL PAIRS / MẪU ÂM
  • She said FIVE ideas.
  • Did you say FIVE — not FIFTY?
  • They asked WHEN we could REPLY.
SHADOW 3 LƯỢT
She said five ideas, so I confirmed five, not fifty, before reporting the next step.

Two fictional student groups have finished an online planning meeting. During the call, Linh said, ‘Our group is ready to send five ideas tomorrow.’ Ken asked, ‘Have you checked the English titles?’ He then asked, ‘When can your group reply to our questions?’ Nam took notes, but he first wrote ‘fifty’ instead of ‘five’. Before sending the briefing, Mai checked the recording used in the classroom script and asked Linh, ‘Did you say five ideas?’ Linh confirmed the number. In the final report, Mai wrote that Linh's group was ready and that it would send five ideas the next day. She reported that Ken had asked whether they had checked the English titles. She also wrote that he had asked when their group could reply. The teams agreed on Friday afternoon as the next check-in. Mai did not add that Ken was unhappy because his voice sounded serious; the words did not support that judgement. Her report included speakers, key statements, questions, the confirmed number and the deadline. It ended with one action for each group, so nobody ordered grass for fifty imaginary goats.

  • 1What number did Linh confirm?
  • 2Why did Mai not report that Ken was unhappy?
TALK • ROLE + GOAL + REPAIR

Hội thoại có mục đích

Mục tiêu: Tường thuật rồi xác nhận một điểm quan trọng trước khi chốt việc.
Vai: A: người báo cáo • B: người kiểm biên bản

ALinh said that her group was ready.

BHow many ideas did she say they would send?

AShe said five, but I will confirm the number.

BWhat did Ken ask?

AHe asked whether we had checked the titles and when we could reply.

BGood. Let us confirm Friday as the next check-in.

Good cooperation depends on a report that can travel

So sánh DIRECT → REPORTED. Gạch speaker, information, pronoun, tense, number/time và phần người viết tuyệt đối không được tự thêm.

A meeting disappears when people leave unless its meaning can travel in a reliable report. Good notes do more than collect sentences. They identify who said what, which questions remain open and what each group will do next. Reported speech helps the writer change the viewpoint while preserving the message. After a completed meeting, ‘Our group is ready’ may become ‘Linh said that her group was ready.’ A promise with will may shift to would. A yes/no question becomes asked if or whether followed by statement word order: ‘Have you checked the title?’ becomes ‘Ken asked whether they had checked the title.’ A wh-question keeps its question word but also uses statement order: ‘When can you reply?’ becomes ‘He asked when they could reply.’ Pronouns and time words should change only when the new speaker, time or place requires it. Accuracy is not only grammatical. Names, numbers and deadlines deserve explicit confirmation because a small listening error can change an action. The reporter must also separate words from interpretation. A serious tone may be noticeable, but it does not automatically prove that a speaker was angry or disappointed. If attitude matters, ask rather than invent it. A briefing ends with attributed statements, unresolved questions and agreed next steps. Another participant should be able to compare the report with their notes and identify the same plan. In international cooperation, this check is not a sign of distrust. It is a way to protect shared meaning across accents, connections and different expectations.

1What happens to word order in a reported question?

2Why should numbers and deadlines be confirmed?

WRITE • 120–150 WORDS

Viết briefing 120–150 từ sau cuộc họp hư cấu.

Viết cho người đọc thật: dựng ý, viết nháp, kiểm nghĩa rồi mới sửa hình thức.

Plan

  1. Meeting purpose
  2. Two attributed statements
  3. One yes/no question
  4. One wh-question
  5. Confirmed number/time
  6. Next actions + limit

The two fictional student groups met to plan a short cultural exchange. Linh said that her group was ready and that it would send five ideas the next day. Mai confirmed five, not fifty, before writing the report. Ken asked whether the Vietnamese group had checked the English titles. He also asked when they could reply to the partner questions. The teams agreed that the next check-in would be on Friday afternoon. Group A will send the five titled ideas, while Group B will prepare one clarification question for each idea. The notes do not show that any participant was angry or disappointed, so the briefing does not add that interpretation. Both groups should compare this report with their own notes and correct any difference before acting. The purpose is shared meaning: the right speaker, message, number, deadline and next step.
