Linking verbs và stative/dynamic meanings: nghĩa chọn dạng
Linking verbs như be, seem, appear, become, remain nối chủ ngữ với mô tả. Một số động từ đổi nghĩa: think = có quan điểm (stative) nhưng be thinking = đang cân nhắc; have = sở hữu nhưng be having = đang trải nghiệm/thực hiện; see = hiểu nhưng be seeing = đang gặp.
Khung câu
- linking verb + adjective/noun phrase
- stative meaning → usually simple
- temporary activity/experience → continuous may be possible
- time marker + intended meaning decide the form
Câu dùng thật
The plan seems practical.
I think the rule is fair.
I’m thinking about a safer route.
I have a map, but I’m having trouble reading it.
Bẫy cần gỡ
Không biến mọi stative verb thành continuous để nghe ‘nâng cao’. Không nói I’m knowing. Với feel/look/taste, phải xác định đây là trạng thái, cảm nhận hay hành động có chủ ý.
Contractions, sentence stress và nhịp của câu sửa nghĩa
Ưu tiên người nghe hiểu rõ. Có hai mẫu Anh–Mỹ/Anh–Anh; giọng cụ thể phụ thuộc thiết bị, còn IPA và hướng dẫn khẩu hình là chuẩn đối chiếu.
Co be trong phần không mang trọng tâm: I’m /aɪm/, we’re /wɪə/. Nhấn động từ khi đối chiếu nghĩa: I HAVE a map, but I’m HAVING trouble. Các từ chức năng nhẹ hơn để nhịp không đều từng từ.
- I think — I’m THINKING
- I HAVE a map — I’m HAVING trouble
- The plan SEEMS practical
I have a calendar, but I’m having trouble using it, so I’m asking for one specific check.1. Nghe không nói. 2. Nói đè theo cụm. 3. Tự ghi âm và so độ rõ.

Linh is preparing a fictional one-day study visit without a parent organising every detail. Her plan seems clear at first: she has a route map, a timetable and the organiser’s contact number. On Thursday evening, however, she is having trouble understanding one transfer between two buses. She says, ‘I think the first route is too risky.’ This sentence expresses her opinion. Then she adds, ‘I’m thinking about the second route.’ This describes a process happening now. Linh does not hand the entire task to her brother. She asks for one specific kind of support: she wants him to check whether she has read the transfer time correctly. Her brother remains a checker, not the planner. He confirms the time but notices that the final bus arrives after the meeting begins. The second route now appears unsuitable. Linh chooses a third option from the fictional schedule and writes down an agreed backup step. If she misses the transfer, she will contact the organiser from a safe public place. By the end of the conversation, she still owns the decision and the next action. Asking one focused question has not reduced her independence. It has helped her test a plan before using it. The scenario contains no real route, number or live location.
- 1Why is Linh using I’m thinking?
- 2What support does Linh request?
Hội thoại có mục đích
Mục tiêu: Xin một check cụ thể nhưng vẫn giữ ownership.
Vai: A: người lập kế hoạch • B: người hỗ trợ

BWhat are you thinking about instead?
AI’m thinking about the second route, but I’m having trouble with one transfer.
BWhat would you like me to check?
APlease check whether I have read the time correctly.
BI’ll check that detail; the final decision remains yours.
Independence is ownership with visible support
Tìm DESCRIPTION–MEANING OF VERB–OWNERSHIP–SUPPORT BOUNDARY–BACKUP. Soi mọi continuous form bằng câu hỏi ‘activity nào đang diễn ra?’.
Independence is sometimes presented as the ability to complete every task without another person. That definition hides an important skill: deciding what support is needed while keeping ownership of the decision. Language can make the boundary visible. Linking verbs describe how a plan appears, becomes or remains. A route may seem practical before one missing detail is checked; a student may remain responsible even after asking another person to verify that detail. Some verbs also change grammatical behaviour when their meaning changes. ‘I think the plan is fair’ expresses an opinion, so the simple form is usual. ‘I’m thinking about another option’ describes an active process occurring now. ‘I have a timetable’ expresses possession, while ‘I’m having trouble with the timetable’ describes a temporary experience. The continuous form is not automatically more advanced. It is correct only when the intended meaning supports it. A focused support request names the exact check, keeps private information protected and leaves the next decision with the learner. ‘Could you verify this transfer time?’ is more independent than either hiding confusion or asking someone to organise everything. A useful plan also states a backup: whom to contact, which safe public point to use or when to stop and seek responsible help. In a classroom task, these details should remain fictional. Students can practise decision-making without publishing real routes, schedules or contact information. Independence then becomes observable under this fictional plan: the learner identifies a limit, requests a defined check, evaluates the response and chooses the next step.
1Why is the continuous form not automatically more advanced?
2What makes a support request focused?

Model • 156 words
I am planning a fictional one-day study visit. At first, the route seems practical because I have a map and a timetable. However, I’m having trouble understanding one transfer. I think the first option is too risky because the connection is very short, so I’m thinking about a second route. I will not ask another person to organise the whole journey. Instead, I will ask my brother to check whether I have read the transfer time correctly. He will verify that detail, while I will compare the options and make the final choice. If the transfer fails, I will contact the fictional organiser from an agreed safe public place. No real route, live location or phone number appears in this plan. Asking for one precise check does not remove my responsibility. It helps me test a limit, protect safety and keep ownership of the next step. I will review the plan once more before the visit.
