Read the place, not just the plaque

The sign gave us a reason to enter; the closed gate gave us a reason to read the opening hours.

Tấm biển cho chúng tôi lý do đi vào; cánh cổng đóng cho chúng tôi lý do đọc giờ mở cửa.

To-infinitive có thể bổ nghĩa cho reason/chance/plan và đứng sau adjective: a reason to enter, ready to visit.

04

/ɪnˈtɜːprɪt ə ˈkʌltʃərəl ˈfiːtʃə/diễn giải một đặc điểm văn hoá

The guide interprets one feature without inventing a story.

05

/əkˈnɒlɪdʒ ˈmɪsɪŋ ˈevɪdəns/thừa nhận bằng chứng còn thiếu

A careful caption acknowledges missing evidence.

06

leave a respectful trace

/liːv ə rɪˈspektfl treɪs/để lại dấu ấn có trách nhiệm

A useful question is a more respectful trace than a scratched name.

  • action + to-infinitive → purpose
  • noun + to-infinitive → postmodifier/complement
  • adjective + to-infinitive → reaction/readiness
  • the first/next/only + noun + to-infinitive

Câu dùng thật

We opened the map to check the boundary.

The team has a plan to interview fictional residents.

They are ready to revise the caption.

Lan was the first student to question the unsupported label.

SOUND • CLEAR ENGLISH

Dạng yếu của to /tə/ và nối phụ âm–nguyên âm

KHẨU HÌNH

Trong lời nói trung tính, to thường thành /tə/: plan to ask /plæn tə rɑːsk/. Phụ âm cuối nối sang nguyên âm đầu: first_student. Khi đối chiếu chính từ to, có thể dùng /tuː/. Giữ tốc độ rõ, không nuốt động từ chính.

MINIMAL PAIRS / MẪU ÂM
  • a plan to ask /ə plæn tə rɑːsk/
  • ready to edit /ˈredi tə ˈedɪt/
  • the first‿student to notice

A Grade 11 class receives a fictional visitor file for Lantern Courtyard. The first page calls the courtyard ancient, unique and internationally important, but it gives no source. Instead of copying the labels, the students make a plan to check what the file actually supports. Minh opens a dated community note to verify when the current wooden model was built. Lan is the first student to notice that the note describes a reconstruction, not the age of the whole courtyard. The team is ready to revise its caption. It writes that the model represents an earlier design, while the exact date of the original feature remains unverified in the classroom file. The group then studies a visitor map to identify one protected area and one route for a fictional guided visit. The purpose is not to create a real tourism rule. It is to practise explaining a boundary clearly. During the visit simulation, one student asks why guests cannot enter a marked work area. The guide answers that the boundary allows a craft demonstration to continue safely. At the end, the students add two questions for further research and one instruction for visitors to follow. Their final caption is less dramatic than the first label, but it is more useful: it distinguishes the reconstructed model, the living activity and the evidence still needed.

Heritage information needs verbs, not just adjectives

Khoanh tính từ quảng bá; gạch động từ chỉ thao tác kiểm chứng. Tìm SOURCE–VOICE–BOUNDARY–UNCERTAINTY trước khi tóm tắt.

Visitors often meet heritage through adjectives: ancient, unique, authentic and important. Such words can attract attention, but they do not show how a conclusion was reached. A responsible interpretation gives the reader actions to follow and evidence to examine. A dated record may help a researcher to establish when one structure was repaired. An interview may offer a community member a chance to explain how a practice is used today. Neither source automatically proves every claim about an entire place. To-infinitive clauses help organise these relationships. A team may visit an archive to verify a date; this infinitive states purpose. It may also have a decision to make or a question to investigate; these infinitives complete or modify nouns. Team members may be ready to change a caption when the source boundary becomes clear. Good interpretation also separates a protected feature from a living activity. A visitor boundary should explain what it allows people to protect, continue or study. It should not present local people as decorations around an old object. In classroom work, a fictional site is useful because students can practise the method without pretending to hold authority over a real community. The final text should identify its source type, state what can be observed and acknowledge what remains uncertain. It may invite readers to ask a respectful question or follow an agreed route. The most valuable sentence is not always the most impressive one. It is often the sentence that gives a reader a fair reason to trust, question or verify the next claim. Heritage stays meaningful when interpretation leaves room for evidence, current users and responsible action.

1Why are adjectives alone insufficient?

2Why does the text use a fictional site for classroom work?

Lantern Courtyard is a fictional learning site used to practise responsible heritage interpretation. Our classroom file contains a dated community note to identify when the current wooden model was built. The note describes a reconstruction, so it does not prove the age of the whole courtyard. We are ready to revise the first caption, which called every feature ancient. Visitors have one marked route to follow during the simulation. The boundary is designed to keep a craft demonstration safe and to leave enough working space for the fictional makers. Guests may ask questions, study the model and record non-personal observations. They must not enter the work area or present the demonstration as an unchanged tradition. Our next task is to find a source to explain when the earlier design was first recorded. We also need a participant to review our description of the current activity. This brief gives visitors a reason to be curious and careful. It distinguishes what the file supports, what people still use and what the class needs to verify.
