Which referring to a whole preceding clause
- main clause, which + verb ... → comment on the whole event
- noun, which + verb ... → extra information about that noun
- use a comma before whole-clause which
- rewrite with This if the reference is ambiguous
Câu dùng thật
The pilot added six benches, which pleased the walker roles.
The team delayed the survey, which reduced the amount of evidence.
The screen, which stood near the gate, showed a route map.
The route changed. This confused two user roles.
Bẫy cần gỡ
Không để which có thể chỉ hai antecedents khác nhau. Whole-clause which không tạo quan hệ nhân quả chắc chắn; nó chỉ gắn nhận xét/kết quả với mệnh đề trước. Nếu nghĩa mơ hồ, tách thành câu với This change/event.
Homophones và near-homophones: which–witch, right–write
- which /wɪtʃ/ — witch /wɪtʃ/
- right /raɪt/ — write /raɪt/
- site /saɪt/ — sight /saɪt/
Write which change happened at the right site.1. Nghe không nói. 2. Nói đè theo cụm. 3. Tự ghi âm và so độ rõ.
One square, two reactions
Ghi CHANGE–MEASURE–GROUP–REACTION–UNINTENDED EFFECT–MISSING DATA. Với mỗi which, viết EVENT hay NOUN.

A fictional town tests a six-week change in a small public square. The design team adds six benches and moves two delivery spaces to a side street. A school newsroom receives two short source files. The first file reports that more walker role cards stopped in the square during the final simulation, which pleased the local shop role. It also notes that the new benches included two spaces beside them for wheelchair role cards. The second file records a different reaction. Moving the delivery spaces increased the simulated walking distance for one delivery role, which led the team to review the route. The team then added a timed loading point nearer the square during early hours. The change reduced the extra distance in the next simulation, but the test involved only three delivery roles. The student editor separates each urban change from the reaction it produced. She does not write that all residents were pleased or that the new layout caused permanent economic growth. One screen, which stood near the entrance, displayed a fictional feedback code; this which-clause describes the screen, not the whole event. By contrast, ‘The team delayed the evening survey, which reduced the amount of evidence’ comments on the entire delay. The editor asks for a wider sample, an accessibility check and another observation period. Her final update states what changed, who reacted, what measure was recorded and which question remains open. The square is neither declared a perfect success nor dismissed as a failure.

Hội thoại có mục đích
Mục tiêu: Nêu change–reaction–limit và làm rõ antecedent của which.
Vai: A: biên tập viên • B: phóng viên
AWhat changed in the square?
BThe team added six benches, which pleased the walker roles.
ADid every role benefit?
BNo. Moving the delivery spaces increased one role's walking distance.
AWhat did that lead to?
BThis effect led the team to test a timed loading point.
Urban change is plural even when a headline is singular
Đọc CHANGE–WHO GAINS–WHO PAYS–MEASURE–TIME–WHOLE-CLAUSE COMMENT–NEXT CHECK.
A headline may reduce an urban change to one word: renewal, congestion or progress. A balanced report expands that frame by asking what changed, which groups were affected, what was measured and over what period. One redesigned square can create several experiences. New benches may support rest, while relocated delivery spaces may increase walking distance for a worker role. A report should hold both observations without forcing them into a single success-or-failure label. A relative clause with which can help a writer add a reaction or consequence to a whole event. ‘The team delayed the evening survey, which reduced the amount of evidence’ means that the delay as a whole reduced the evidence. The comma matters, and the reference should be clear. In ‘The screen, which stood near the entrance, showed a map’, which describes the screen instead. If readers could attach the clause to more than one possible idea, a new sentence is safer: ‘This delay reduced the evidence.’ The structure does not prove cause by itself. Writers still need a plausible mechanism, an appropriate comparison and cautious language. Sources also frame change differently. A design note may highlight intended access; a delivery record may reveal an extra burden; a short survey may miss people who were absent. Balanced reporting does not mean giving every claim equal weight. It means evaluating the quality and scope of each source, including disagreement and naming missing data. Classroom urban files should be fictional so that no student accidentally publishes addresses, travel patterns or complaints about individuals. The final update can recommend a wider sample, another period or an accessibility review. Its purpose is not to decide whether urbanisation is universally good or bad. It is to show how one change produced different recorded outcomes and why the next decision needs several viewpoints.

A fictional town tested a new layout in a small public square for six weeks. The team added six benches and moved two delivery spaces to a side street. More walker role cards stopped in the square during the final simulation, which pleased the local shop role. Two spaces beside the benches also remained clear for wheelchair role cards. However, the second source recorded a trade-off. Moving the delivery spaces increased the simulated walking distance for one delivery role, which led the team to review the route. A timed loading point was then tested during early hours, and the extra distance fell in the next simulation. This result came from only three delivery roles, which limits the conclusion. The update does not claim that every resident benefited or that the layout caused permanent economic growth. The evening survey was delayed, which reduced the amount of feedback available. I recommend a wider fictional sample, another observation period and a separate accessibility check before expansion. No real address, journey or complaint appears in the classroom file. The evidence shows several recorded outcomes from one change; it does not justify a single label of total success or failure.
