Compare without ranking

So sánh mà không xếp hạng

Our poster said every tradition was exactly the same; the map asked which measuring tape we had used.

Áp-phích nói mọi truyền thống giống hệt nhau; tấm bản đồ hỏi nhóm đã dùng loại thước đo nào.

So sánh cần cùng tiêu chí và đúng phạm vi; bình đẳng giá trị không có nghĩa mọi thực hành giống nhau.

GRAM • MEANING → FORM → USE

Adverbial clauses of comparison: cùng tiêu chí, đúng phạm vi

Mệnh đề so sánh dùng as…as, not as…as hoặc comparative + than để đối chiếu cùng một đặc điểm. As if/as though diễn tả vẻ bề ngoài hay ấn tượng, không tự xác nhận sự thật. Có thể lược phần lặp khi nghĩa vẫn rõ.

Khung câu

  • as + adjective/adverb + as + subject + verb
  • not as/so + adjective/adverb + as + subject + verb
  • comparative + than + subject + verb
  • as if/as though + clause = appearance, not proof

Câu dùng thật

The audio guide is as detailed as the printed guide is.

The first caption was not as clear as the revised one was.

More visitors asked questions than the team had expected.

The label sounded as if one voice represented everyone.

Bẫy cần gỡ

Không so sánh cả một nền văn hoá bằng nhãn better/worse. Hai vế phải có tiêu chí tương ứng; as if chỉ ấn tượng, không phải bằng chứng. Không dùng more clearer hoặc as detailed than.

A fictional school team is designing three panels for a culture week. The first panel describes a welcome meal created by the Blue River club. Its draft is colourful, but it uses the phrase ‘people from this culture always eat together’. A club representative explains that the meal is one activity chosen by this group, not a rule for every family. The team replaces the sentence with a first-person quotation approved by the representative. The second panel presents a greeting performance. Its audio guide is as detailed as its printed guide is, so students who prefer either format receive the same core explanation. However, the recording uses one student’s voice without a final consent check. Publication is delayed until that permission is confirmed. The third panel compares the two activities. More visitors asked about participation than the designers had expected, but the original survey counted only morning visitors. The team therefore does not claim that one activity is more popular. It says that the morning sample produced more participation questions for the performance panel. During the review, one student remarks that the first draft sounded as if a single sentence represented a whole community. Her tone is concerned, not angry. The group accepts the correction and adds three labels to every panel: speaker, approved wording and evidence limit. The panels now show differences without ranking people, and they preserve a route for participants to request a change.

  • 1Why is publication of the second panel delayed?
  • 2Why does the team avoid saying one activity is more popular?

Equal respect does not require identical descriptions

Gạch VOICE–SCOPE–CRITERION–ACCESS–CONSENT. Khoanh as…as, than và as if rồi hỏi hai vế đang so gì.

Respectful cultural communication does not require writers to pretend that every practice is identical. It requires them to compare carefully, preserve people’s right to describe themselves and avoid turning one example into a permanent group label. A useful profile begins with scope. Is it about one event, one club, one family account or a wider documented pattern? The wording should match that boundary. First-person material can reduce outside guesswork, but a quotation still needs informed consent and accurate context. A speaker should know where the words, image or voice will appear and how to request correction. Translation also needs checking. A translated caption may be as accurate as the original in factual content but not as clear in tone. Back-checking with an approved reader can reveal that difference. Comparison clauses help when the criterion is visible: one guide may be easier to navigate than another is, or an audio version may be as complete as the printed version is. The grammar does not permit ranking human worth. Nor does a larger response count automatically show deeper cultural value. Access belongs inside the comparison. If the same explanation is available only in tiny print, the exhibition does not offer equal use even when every panel contains the same number of words. Designers can compare readability, navigation time, language support and opportunities to ask questions. Finally, writers should mark interpretation. A display may sound as if one voice represents everyone, but that is a reason to inspect the source and scope, not to accuse the speaker. Responsible editing keeps the named evidence, removes the stereotype and leaves a visible route for correction. The result is not a perfect final portrait. It is a more transparent account of who spoke, what was approved, which criterion was compared and what remains unknown.

1What should determine the wording of a cultural profile?

2Why can equal word counts still fail to provide equal access?

Model • 199 words

This culture-week review compares two student-created panels on criteria: source voice, access and correction. The Blue River panel uses an approved first-person quotation about one welcome meal. The Hill Garden panel describes one greeting performance and names the student group that prepared it. Neither panel claims to represent every family or community. The audio guide is as detailed as the printed guide is, although its navigation instructions are not as clear. More morning visitors asked participation questions at the performance panel than the team had expected. However, the sample did not include afternoon visitors, so the count cannot establish overall popularity or cultural value. The first draft sounded as if one activity described an entire culture. We replaced that sentence with wording limited to the fictional event. Before publication, the team must confirm voice consent and have an approved reader check the translated captions. Each panel will show its speaker, approval date, evidence limit and correction contact. These steps make the comparison easier to inspect and use. They do not create a complete portrait of any culture. The review recommends equal access to the core explanation and a route for participants to revise how their own contribution is presented.
