For one school week, four students tested a small change during homework. They did not delete any app or stop using the internet. Instead, they put their phones on a shelf two metres away and muted non-essential group chats for twenty-five minutes. Before the test, each student guessed how often they normally checked a notification. During the test, they used a simple mark on paper whenever they wanted to reach for the phone. On Monday, the group made thirty-one marks. By Friday, they made eighteen. Two students said the distance helped them focus, while one preferred keeping the phone nearby for a family call. The group did not claim that one rule suited everyone. They concluded that a clear purpose, a finish time and an exception for important contact made the routine easier to follow. The numbers described urges, not completed phone checks.

A rule you can explain

A useful digital rule is more than a command such as ‘Use your phone less.’ It names a situation, an action and a reason. For example: ‘When homework starts, I mute game notifications for twenty-five minutes because I want to finish one task.’ The rule also needs a sensible exception. A student may keep calls available for family contact or use a device for an assigned learning activity. Privacy belongs in the plan too: never share another person's photo, location or message without permission. After several days, review the rule with evidence. Did you complete tasks more calmly? Did you miss information that was genuinely important? If the rule failed, adjust one part instead of blaming yourself or the device. Digital balance is not a perfect number for every person. It is a set of choices that match purpose, safety, responsibilities and rest. The learner remains responsible for each deliberate choice.
