GRAM • MEANING → FORM → USE

Reported speech + relative clauses: giữ giọng và nguồn

Said that tường thuật điều một người nói; told + person + that cần tân ngữ. Mệnh đề xác định không có dấu phẩy; mệnh đề không xác định thêm thông tin phụ, có dấu phẩy và dùng who/which, không dùng that.

Khung câu

  • speaker + said (that) + reported clause
  • speaker + told + person + (that) + reported clause
  • defining: noun + who/which/that + clause
  • non-defining: noun, who/which + clause, + main clause

Câu dùng thật

Mrs Lan said that the hall was busy on market days.

She told the class that her account was a personal memory.

The hall, which reopened in 2008, has a dated public record.

Nhấn SPEAKER và MESSAGE; that thường nhẹ /ðət/. Hạ giọng ở cuối lời tường thuật hoàn chỉnh; dừng nhẹ quanh non-defining clause.

A student team is editing a fictional exhibition about Green Hall. The municipal record states that the hall reopened in 2008 after repairs. An interview transcript contains a different kind of evidence. Mrs Lan said that market mornings had felt crowded and lively when she was a child. She told the students that her account was a personal memory, not a measurement of every market day. Mr Khoa, who worked near the hall in the 1990s, recalled that deliveries usually arrived early. However, he said that he could not identify the year of one undated photograph. The team keeps each speaker's name beside the reported statement. It also writes that the photograph's date remains unknown. The final label uses the dated record for the reopening, attributed memories for past experience and a clear gap where evidence is missing. It does not combine the three sources into one unsupported claim. A second student checks every pronoun in the draft to ensure that no memory is accidentally attached to the wrong speaker.

An ethical label keeps evidence attached to its owner

Tìm ai tạo record, ai kể memory, ai viết inference. Nếu không tìm thấy chủ thể, label đang che mất nguồn.

Heritage displays often place objects, official records, photographs and oral accounts beside one another. Their closeness does not make them the same kind of source. A dated record may establish when a building reopened. A photograph may preserve visible details without naming every person or explaining a cause. An interview tells us what a speaker remembers or understood. Ethical editing keeps those differences clear. Use reported speech to attach a memory to its speaker, and do not remove words that mark uncertainty. A non-defining relative clause can add verified background: ‘Green Hall, which reopened in 2008, appears in the town record.’ A defining clause can identify the relevant person or object: ‘The resident who gave the interview worked nearby.’ Punctuation and attribution are not decoration; they protect meaning. When details conflict or remain unknown, the label should say so. Readers can then value each voice without mistaking one memory for the complete experience of a whole community. The same rule applies when a student paraphrases: the shorter wording must not increase certainty, erase disagreement or move an idea from one speaker to an entire community.

Green Hall, which appears in the town's dated record, reopened in 2008 after repairs. An older undated photograph shows people standing beside its east entrance, but it does not identify them. Mrs Lan said that market mornings had felt crowded and lively when she was a child. She told the student editors that this was her personal memory, not a description of every market day. Mr Khoa, who worked nearby in the 1990s, recalled that deliveries usually arrived early. He could not identify the year of the photograph. This label therefore separates the reopening record, visible details and attributed memories. The photograph's date and the identities of the people remain unknown.
