Name the issue before the slogan

Posting ‘Listen to everyone’ took five seconds; listening to everyone has taken the whole meeting.

Đăng câu ‘Hãy lắng nghe mọi người’ mất năm giây; thực sự lắng nghe mọi người thì chiếm cả cuộc họp.

Gerund biến hành động thành danh ngữ: Posting/Listening có thể làm chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ.

Gerund as subject/object: biến hành động thành điều được bàn

  • V-ing + singular verb as subject
  • avoid/consider/suggest + V-ing
  • preposition + V-ing
  • possessive/object reference only when the doer must be clear

Câu dùng thật

Listening to two viewpoints takes time.

The team avoids speaking for others.

They considered changing the meeting format.

Before proposing a response, they checked the source.

Bẫy cần gỡ

Không dùng suggest to do trong mẫu này; dùng suggest doing hoặc suggest that + clause.

Giảm âm từ chức năng: listening to /ˈlɪsənɪŋ tə/, speaking for /ˈspiːkɪŋ fə/. Nhấn action và object: LISTENING to TWO VIEWPOINTS.

A fictional student group wants to improve access to an after-school information session. Its first poster says, ‘Opening every door starts today.’ The slogan sounds positive, but it does not define a barrier. The group then examines two invented sources: an attendance table and six anonymous comments created for the lesson. The table shows that attendance was lower at the late session than at the earlier one. Three comments mention transport timing, while two mention unclear instructions. One comment gives a different reason. Consulting more than one viewpoint prevents the team from calling transport the cause for every student. The group begins rewriting its issue brief. Attending the late session may be difficult for some fictional participants under this timetable. Avoiding a universal claim keeps the source visible. The team considers testing an earlier session and a clearer invitation, but it does not launch both changes at once. Testing one change first will make the result easier to interpret. Before proposing the trial, the students ask who has not been represented in the invented comments. They add a fictional follow-up channel and a privacy rule: no names, contact details or sensitive experiences will be collected. The final brief names one observed pattern, two possible barriers, one missing viewpoint and one limited response. The poster has become smaller; the reasoning has become larger.

AWhat action are you treating as the issue?

BAttending the late session appears difficult for some fictional participants.

AWhat supports that statement?

BAn invented attendance table and several anonymous comments.

AWhose viewpoint is still missing?

BWe need another fictional response channel before proposing the trial.

Turning an action into a noun does not turn it into evidence

Khoanh gerund; gạch CLAIM–SOURCE–SCOPE–MISSING VOICE–RESPONSE. Hỏi mỗi gerund phrase đang làm subject, object hay sau preposition.

Gerunds help speakers discuss actions as ideas. ‘Listening takes time’ turns listening into the subject of a sentence. ‘The group considered changing the format’ places changing after a verb that selects a gerund. This grammar is useful in an issue brief because social questions often involve actions: accessing information, joining an activity, reporting a problem or representing a viewpoint. Grammar alone, however, cannot define the issue. A large phrase such as ‘improving access’ may still hide who experienced a barrier, where it occurred and what source recorded it. A careful brief begins with an observable pattern and a limited context. It then separates possible explanations from established facts. Anonymous invented comments may suggest several barriers, but they do not represent every person or prove cause. Consulting more than one viewpoint reduces one risk: the project team speaking for people it has not heard. The brief should also identify a missing perspective. Naming that absence is more honest than filling it with an assumption. A testable response changes one clear feature, names an owner and uses a stated measure. If several changes are introduced together, interpreting the result becomes harder. Privacy remains part of the design. A classroom simulation should not request real names, contact information, medical details, family circumstances or accounts of harm. Students can practise defining a problem with fictional records. The language goal is precise and demanding: use a gerund to name the action, a source to bound the claim and a next step that can reveal whether the proposed response helped under those conditions.

1What can a gerund do in an issue brief?

2Why should a classroom simulation use fictional records?

  4. Missing viewpoint
  5. One testable response
  6. Privacy + limitation

Model • 156 words

Improving access to a fictional after-school information session is the focus of this brief. An invented attendance table shows lower participation at the late session than at the earlier one. Six anonymous comments created for the lesson mention transport timing, unclear instructions and one different reason. These sources do not prove that transport is the cause for every student. Consulting another viewpoint is necessary before the group chooses a response. The team therefore suggests opening a fictional follow-up channel without collecting names, contact details or sensitive experiences. It will then test one earlier session while keeping the invitation unchanged. Testing one feature first should make the result easier to interpret. The organiser will compare attendance under the two times and record the limit of the comparison. Avoiding a universal claim does not weaken the project. It shows exactly what has been observed, which explanation remains uncertain and what the next small trial is designed to check.
